PITCH PITCH PITCH

Those who accuse me of repeating "More rudder less stick" a bazillion times, you're right. Thanks for noticing. Think you tire of hearing that? Imagine how it wearies me, even when you're not around! It's the truth though, so somebody has to say it and I got drafted. Cross gladly borne. All anyone has to do is actually try using more rudder and less stick to see how much better it works so I can move on to chanting something else. Wouldn't that be nice!In related business, I repeat “pitch control" more often than should be necessary too. Whether you’re towing, soaring, gliding or landing, nothing is more important at every moment than having appropriate speed, and you can only maintain that speed by holding the right PITCH. Chasing an airspeed indicator is the worst way to control speed. It's ineffective, there's lag time, and ignoring reality to focus on that needle every few seconds is a major distraction. All you need to do is look out the FRONT through the YAW STRING to the HORIZON and hold the picture steady. It couldn’t be more simple. Note also the tone and level of ambient noise at that speed and keep it the same when you’re looking everywhere else. This way, after an adjustment or two you’ll have time to study the landscape and sky for non-virtual information actually related to you and your immediate future. Flatter glides and smarter decisions will be the first benefits, with others soon to follow. And then I can quit pitching.
