One advantage: it’s often possible for even a beginner to stay aloft indefinitely and advance more quickly through the learning process, while one innocent mistake may defeat the same pilot in thermal conditions. For pilots new to mountain soaring, close proximity to rocks and trees can affect pilot judgment, prompting intuitive responses that are counterproductive.
