Soaring Forecast March 5 - 8

SOARING WEATHER FORECAST FOR SCSA (CRYSTALAIRE - 46CN) MARCH 5 — 8, 2010

Last Week wave was forecast Friday ahead of a front. Pilots who retired early missed out on the strong wave that developed in the afternoon.Sunday and Monday we were anticipating good early season thermal activity per the forecast but the persistent presence of high-level cirro stratus limited energy reaching the ground. Alternatively, over our San Gabriel summits there was a long line of convergence marked by cycling cumulus from Northeast and South winds colliding aloft. Pilots who towed to the area were rewarded with consistent lift.

THIS PERIOD; We will enjoy the return of our westerly flow. Friday to Saturday a dry low pressure cell will pass by inducing a southwest wind flow that will become Northwest Sunday to Monday. We don't expect high level clouds this period to interfere with energy reaching the ground and Dr. Jacks blipmaps point to some decent thermal potential. The models indicate the southwest flow in combination with the passage of this quick moving front pose the opportunity for some local wave on Saturday afternoon with boundary layer winds indicated southwest at 35+ knots.Should be a great weekend to hunt down early season thermals with the opportunity to link to wave.Dr Jack's predictions indicate FRIDAY the ceiling of useable lift will be at 9,000 feet with 500 fpm of lift.SATURDAY, Dr. Jack predicts the ceiling of useable lift will be at 9,500 feet with 550 fpm of lift.Dr. Jack's Blipmaps and soaring predictions are free with a simple registration at his website.http://www.drjack.info/The National Weather Service is predicting the following surface conditions for Friday through Monday:FRIDAY:Sunny, Temperature: 58 degreesWind: Southwest 10 to 13mph.SATURDAY:Sun and Clouds, Temperature: 48 degreesWind: Southwest 8 to 13 mph.SUNDAY:Mostly Sunny, Temperature: 56 degreesWind: Northwest 18 mph.MONDAY:Sunny, Temperature: 59 degreesWind: Southwest 11 mph.SATURDAY 3:00 PM BOUNDARY LAYER WIND SPEEDSSATURDAY THERMAL VELOCITY FORECASTFRIDAY SURFACE ANALYSIS
